Why Consider Paying Privately or “Out of Pocket”?
Many clients choose not to use their insurance for mental health counseling based on highly deductibles in their policy (the insurance company will only pay after deductibles are met), not wanting to have limitations in counseling services due to diagnosis or only a certain number of sessions approved. Insurance companies often limit the number of sessions and even the type of therapy.
To have therapy services covered by the insurance company, you have to be assigned a mental health diagnosis, which then becomes a part of your permanent health care record. There are cases where the person does not meet the criteria for a psychiatric diagnosis, which interferes with the billing process and might cause a denial in reimbursement for the therapist. If you need to request more sessions, the therapist will need to justify your necessity by disclosing personal, sensitive information to the insurance company.
By paying privately or “out of pocket”, counselors can assure private pay clients the highest degree of privacy, flexibility, and control of their mental health record allowed by Florida state law, because our records are exempt from insurance reporting. Remember: many insurance companies require a deductible to be met before they start paying, so you end up paying out of pocket anyway.
When you pay directly to your counselor, you both can, collaboratively, decide how often to attend therapy and you what you want to focus on. You have the control, not the insurance company.
